What is SHA-224 Hash Generator?
SHA-224 belongs to the SHA-2 family standardised in FIPS 180-4. It works like SHA-256 but starts from different initial values and cuts the final result to 224 bits, so its digest is 56 hex characters long. It was designed to match the 112-bit security level of two-key Triple DES.
The tool converts your text to UTF-8 bytes (or reads hex bytes), hashes them with a WebAssembly implementation and displays the digest in hex or Base64, plus the input size. The SHA-224 of "abc" is 23097d22 3405d822 8642a477 bda255b3 2aadbce4 bda0b3f7 e36c9da7.
How does it work?
- Type or paste your text. The digest updates automatically.
- Choose UTF-8 text or hex bytes as the input type.
- Pick hex or Base64 output and upper or lower case letters.
- Copy the 56-character digest, or compare it with the value you were given.
Common use cases
- Reproducing a SHA-224 test vector from FIPS 180-4 or a library test suite.
- Checking a fingerprint published by a system that still uses SHA-224, such as some embedded and smart-card stacks.
- Comparing SHA-224 with SHA-256 to see that the same input gives a related but different digest.
- Generating a shorter digest when a field is limited to 56 hex characters.

Privacy
SHA-224 Hash Generator runs entirely in your browser. The text or files you provide are processed on your device and are not uploaded, logged or stored on our servers.
Limitations
SHA-224 is not a password hash: it is fast by design. It offers less collision resistance (112 bits) than SHA-256, so prefer SHA-256 or stronger for new designs.
Frequently asked questions
Is SHA-224 just SHA-256 cut to 224 bits?
Not exactly. Truncating a SHA-256 digest would give a different value. SHA-224 uses its own initial hash values, and only then drops the last 32 bits of the final state.
Why does my SHA-224 differ from another tool?
Check for a trailing newline, line-ending differences or a non-UTF-8 encoding. The byte length shown in the result helps you compare with your source.
How many characters does a SHA-224 digest have?
56 hexadecimal characters (28 bytes), or 40 characters in Base64 including two padding signs.
